Austria - Vienna

The hometown of our School is Vienna, the capital city of Austria, which has approximately 1,7 million inhabitants. Vienna is famous for its old buildings, like the palais from the „Ringstraße“, museums, castles, churches, coffee houses and familiar atmosphere.

The school building is located in the 6th district, which is one of the smaller parts of vienna. But this isn´t really a disadvantage. Our district has a big amount of old buildings, lovely restaurants, the largest shopping street in austria and is very close to the inner city (1st district).

Our School Building is part of a female monastery complex. The order of the „Barmherzigen Schwestern“ settled in the year 1832 in the 6th district to fight in a little hospital against the cholera. In the following years the field of tasks increased. The sisters were not only responsible for a hospital, they took care for children, especially in kindergarten and school. Today two schools are housed in the building, a primary (age 6 to 10) and a secondary school (age 10 to 14). Every school provides daily exercises for 300 pupils.

CZECH REPUBLIC - ZNOJMOZnojmo_vlajka.gifZnojmo_znak.png

Znojmo is a city in the South Moravian Region of the Czech Republic, near the border with Lower Austria, connected to Vienna by railway and road (80 minutes). The royal city of Znojmo was founded shortly before 1226 by King Ottokar I on the plains in front of Znojmo Castle. The city is situated on a rock outcropping on the steep left bank of the Dyje River.

Notable events and persons

Znojmo is best known for the armistice concluded there in 1809 after the Battle of Wagram between Napoleon and the archduke Charles. It is also the (alleged) birthplace of Leopold Loyka, the driver of Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand's car when Ferdinand was assassinated in Sarajevo 1914, an event which triggered the First World War.
Birthplace of the sculptor Hugo Lederer and writer Charles Sealsfield, it also has a special co-operation relation with Harderwijk, Netherlands.

Main sights

The Gothic Church of St. Nicholas and the Late Gothic Town Hall tower are the most recognizable landmarks. St Nicolas` Church was built in 1348 by Emperor Charles IV, and the town hall, with its 75 m (250 ft) tower, dates from around 1446.
Overlooking the Dyje River valley, on the edge of the medieval city, there is Znojmo Castle, dating back to 11th century, founded by Přemyslid dukes. The only remains of the castle used by the Přemysl dukes is the Romanesque rotunda, the interior of which is covered with 11th-century frescoes depicting biblical scenes and illustrating the life of Přemysl.
Under the city and castle is a vast labrynth of connected passageways and cellars, Znojmo Catacombs, developed in the 14th and 15th century for defensive purposes and containing wells, drainage, fireplaces, trap doors and escapeways that led beyond the fortifications of the city.

" Mittelschule Nordwest" is a public middle school located in Torgau, a small nice city on the banks of the river Elbe. Torgau is a city in the east of Germany, in Saxony. Our state capital is Dresden. Torgau is a historical city. Martin Luther opened the first protestant church in the castle of Torgau, Napoleon Bonaparte declared Torgau a fortress and at the end of World War II, in April 1945, American and Russian soldiers shaked hands down by the banks of the river Elbe. Every year in April there is a big festival " Elbe Day" to celebrate the U.S.- Soviet linkup at the Elbe River. There are some wonderful sights in Torgau, the most beautiful and famous one is our castle- "Hartenfels Castle".
There are nearly no companies here in Torgau so a lot of young people leave our town to find jobs in other parts of Germany. That´s a big problem. We want our students to stay here in Torgau.
Being in the project is important for us because there are also environmental problems in our area- the pollution of the Elbe River and the Big Lake for example. Our students will have to learn that it is necessery to work on environmental issues. And, of course, our students and teachers, participating in the project, will be able to improve their English

Luboń is situated in the centre of the Wielkopolska region, on the left bank of Warta river. It borders Poznań in the north and Wielkopolski National Park in the south. What makes the localization of the town even more specific is a critical part of Warta valley that is an ecological corridor of regional and national importance within the Wielkoprzestrzenny System Obszarów Chronionych ECONET ("Large Capacity System of Protected Areas ECONET”). Luboń is located within the Poznań Ecological Risk Area. The most important problems of Luboń are:
  • pollution of both surface and ground water caused by insufficient technical infrastructure, especially the sewage network that does not discharge sewage from all the households and illegal connections to the water drainage,
  • illegal sewage and rain water discharge into Junikowski stream that runs in the close neighbourhood of the school,
  • air pollution – there are periods when the allowed concentration of the dust in the air is exceeded,
  • acoustic nuisance caused by A2 motorway that runs through the town and the military airport in Krzesiny whose acoustic nuisance areas include Luboń,
  • inefficient selective waste collection, which has been started since 1992, resulting from low ecological awareness.
The participation of our school in the project will be the continuation of actions concerning the promotion of environmental protection that were taken in 2004 – 2007. The actions contributed to the increase of ecological awareness of our students, their parents as well as a large group of Luboń residents. Therefore, actions like “Puszka dla maluszka” or ”Szkolny projekt recyklingowy” are still being taken. However, we do see a necessity of further work on environmental issues. As far as participants with specific needs are concerned, a socio-therapeutic centre for students at risk of social exclusion has been created. There is also an active cooperation with the support association of disabled people “Wspólna droga”. The afternoon classes aim at integration in society and entering local life. The chance of participation in the project will enable teachers, students and their parents as well as Local Authorities and the residents of Luboń to acquaint themselves with different educational systems and lifestyles, and their influence on the environment. The implementation of mutual goals will enable teachers and students to use English language in practice and establish emotional bonds and the sense of unity.

IES Cruz Santa is a comprehensive state-funded secondary school located in a rural area (3500 inhabitants) in the north of the island of Tenerife (Canary Islands). Most pupils come from an underprivileged background which the school has tried to compensate since its foundation (2002). Unfortunately, the present economic crisis is playing its havoc on the local families as the great majority worked on the building sector, which nowadays shows a rather high unemployment rate. Consequently, all of our pupils have the chance of attending reinforcement lessons in the evening. The main aim of the project is to create the need among our pupils and staff to care for the environment as well as using a foreign language. Besides, the exchange of ideas and people from other countries would definitely broaden our minds and enrich our culture in an area where, because of its isolated geographical situation, there is scarce contact with other cultures. The school is already involved in certain environmental projects. In fact, we belong to the network "Globe" by which pupils learn science through the registration of climate data. Our modern meteo station has proved a valuable addition to our teaching procedure. Besides, every group has an eco representative who attends to all the meetings of the environmental committee. Having an important National Park in the surroundings as well as the fact of being an island should contribute to the creation of a general awareness of green issues. Yet, local population is oblivious of what climate change involves. Only recently, people are wondering what it is going on, after having suffered severe weather conditions yearly. Consequently, this project would be a great opportunity to put the message across. All the community of IES Cruz Santa will play an active role in the project as several kinds of activities will be carried out by the different sectors (pupils, families and teachers) and all the educative levels (compulsory secondary, non-compulsory secondary, vocational and special needs group).

"Private Seçkin Primary School" is a well-known institution located in Gaziantep, a city in the south-east of Turkey. Situated in an advantaged context, the school serves pupils from a socio-economically advantaged area. Additionally, 10 % of pupils come from disadvantaged areas and economic conditions. These pupils who are succesful but cannot afford to attend a private school, are given a unique opportunity to have a better atmosphere for an advanced instruction at our school. We believe that this is one of our social responsibilities.
It is not confronted with specific needs from pupils or staff. We don't have migrants or refugees in this area. There aren't any pupils with disabilities at school; however we have some special education needed pupils who have got difficulties at learning. For those, individual education is given by our co-teachers.
Being in the hearth of Gaziantep, one of the most important area of Turkey, the parents are highly well-educated and they give any support to meet school needs. Besides, the staff, most of whom are graduated from the most popular universities of Turkey, are well-equipped to help pupils to produce unique studies and imaginative works for the best wealth of education. Through rigorous student-centered curriculum, teachers ensure that every child works to his/her maximum potential. Special attention is given to pupils with diverse academic, social and language needs. Building a community environment is central to the school philosophy and through professional development, teachers work colloboratively to develope a well-rounded schooing experience for all pupils at "Private Seçkin Primary School".
When it comes to the role in the project, firstly we are the coordinator school of the project and we organized a preparatory visit in our school in January 2011. We also collect all the information from other partners and share it. We have already been working on Eco-school programme, so we are very excited to be the part of a project over envirenment. We have got an Eco-team at our school which aims to contribute the nature conservation. The reason of founding the Eco-team at our school is to make pupils be aware of environmental matters and work together more consciously about it.799px-Torgau_Rathaus.jpg
