TERRANOSTRA@ OUR EARTH?
After contacting through the net, most partners felt the need to create a project about how climate change is affecting our daily lives. From the very beginning of the meetings in the preparatory visit, we started talking about the weather. Funnily enough all of us realised that the weather conditions in every country have changed sharply in recent years. Weather patterns have become nearly unpredictable and this is affecting every social and economic field. Besides, every single country has recently experienced several natural disasters which appeared to be abnormal (floods, drought, strong winds ...) Consequently, we reached an agreement in order to raise the awareness of green issues in our respective educative communities with the hope that local action will create more environmentally committed citizens. Hopefully that will result in a better behaviour towards our planet as well as a better understanding of global problems.On the other hand, governments do not agree on common policies to be carried out owing to economic grounds. Therefore, our educative communities should act responsibly in order to demand the same to the local authorities. In addition, our pupils will be provided with key clues to interpret what it is going on not only in their area, but also in the whole world. By creating this ecological consciousness we are educating responsible and active citizens as the social and civic competence recommends.Although central European countries have been pioneers in the development of an environmentally friendly society, the recent plans to open new power stations pose a threat to the use of clean renewable energy sources. As a result, it is necessary to claim the importance of alternative energy sources that can counterbalance the short-term advantages of nuclear energy. The societies of all the partners need to debate such issue in order to find a proper solution for a common problem.Another issue that must be mentioned is the fact of communicating in a foreign language. All teachers find it difficult to make their pupils express themselves in another language. This project intends to bridge the gap between theory and practice, in short, we are going to create the need to communicate. Being English an international language, it goes without saying that this is going to be a great opportunity for our pupils to improve their communicative competence. Not only will the pupils and teachers who get the mobility benefit from it, but also the whole schools will have the chance to communicate in English through the creation of a common blog and with the exchange of information through e-mails. All in all, they will find the need to use English, which will bring about both a linguistic improvement and a boost in their self-esteem when learning a foreign language.The digital competence is another field we would like to develop. No matter what the distances may be, internet is a powerful tool to compensate inequalities among countries. Our pupils ought to be able to use them not only to communicate in another language, but also to be competent in present day's society. With the creation of a common blog in which all the schools can work, both pupils and teachers will improve their digital skills. Whereas the former will feel more self-confident in the use of new technologies and, therefore they will use them more often in their daily practice, the latter will learn interesting tools to use for personal and professional purposes.As a way to conclude we can say that this project is needed in all the participating countries since we all feel the need to take action in our schools, areas, regions and, why not, nations. Additionally, the exchange of ideas, people, material will provide all the countries with an outstanding opportunity to broaden their minds in order to understand what the European dimension really means. Ultimately, cultural prejudices can be blurred within the framework of a tolerant Europe.
